Tuesday, 6 October 2026
Recommended Age Range of Attendees: 7 plus – please note: children must be accompanied by an Adult. Please register both your child and you.
Nature is full of surprises. Come discover some with us in Waihī Beach!
We'll begin at the library in Waihī Beach, where we'll set to work creating and decorating our own nature journals. All materials for constructing and decorating your journal will be provided free. Once our journals are ready, we'll do a short introduction to how to nature journal, before we head off to explore and record the wonders that await in our own backyard!
We'll depart the library and begin our walk along the path around the Te Mata Wetland Reserve to practice drawing and recording all of our amazing nature discoveries. The revegetation that has occurred in this Reserve over the last couple years is helping to restore this important wetland habitat for native flora and fauna, and this journaling outing will be a great opportunity for Tamariki and accompanying adults to hone their observation skills and take a closer look at some of what's growing. Equipped with magnifying glasses, our team of young adventurers will journey along the path, with stops to learn about plants we see and record our observations. At the end, we'll return to the library to share the most interesting things we've noticed on our walk.
Not confident at drawing? No worries! Nature journaling is first and foremost about learning to look closely and record the amazing natural world around us, not produce the perfect picture. All abilities are most welcome to join us in this fun and supportive setting!
Max number of walkers: 30 (that accommodates 15 children and 15 adults)
