Loop Wires Track
Friday, 27 March 2026
Step back into history as you discover the remnants of the old 1870s telegraph line that once connected Auckland and Wellington, passing right through Waihī Beach. This fascinating walk traces the original route of the “Wires Track,” offering a mix of local heritage, native forest, and sweeping rural views.
The track begins behind the old dam and follows a gentle ridge, with a short, steep climb before levelling out. Along the way, you’ll see remnants of ancient kumara pits and a stunning stand of towering rewarewa trees. Crossing a fence line onto private farmland, you’ll be rewarded with spectacular views across the Waihī Plains to Mount Te Aroha.
The route continues along the boundary between the farmland and the Orokawa Reserve, with breathtaking coastal and inland vistas throughout. For those keen to extend the experience, an optional side track leads out to the Orokawa Trig. The walk then descends via the Firebreak Track to the carpark, rounding out a journey that perfectly blends history, scenery, and serenity.
