Grade 1
Nearest Town: Thames
Registration Region: Thames
Duration: 4-5 hours
Start Time: 9:00 am - Dept of Conservation Kauaeranga Visitors Centre (KVC) approx 7km from Thames on Kauaeranga Valley Rd (signposted from the BP Station on southern outskirts of Thames)

The tour will cover kauri logging sites in the Kauaeranga Valley. It will commence at the KVC with a short brief and visit to the model kauri driving dam, about 15 mins walk each way. (It is hoped to arrange a tripping of the dam but to be confirmed.) We will then drive up the valley (own vehicles required) to visit logging-related sites such as the Billygoat Incline, main tramway, main booms and the tramway bridge site at Hoffmans Pool. Sites related to the Thames water race (completed 1876) will also be pointed out. Finish back at KVC.
In conjunction with the national Week of Archaeology. Guide/narrator: Dave Wilton (local archaeologist - [email protected]).
