Start Time: 10:00 am - Whitianga Ferry

Cost: $7 return ferry ride

Starting with a short ferry ride across the river and a good look at the signboard at Ferry Landing the first part of this walk takes you up to an area covered in bush and has a lovely sheltered picnic spot. Further on takes you around Back Bay and up and over the Maramatotara Track. Keep along the water’s edge on your right and follow the path up to Whitianga Rock and the Maori Pa site. Continue your walk through the ditch and down into Back Bay and follow the Maramatotara track up through a stand of Karaka trees, continue on this track and follow it down till you meet up with Purangi Road facing Front Beach, turning right for a longer walk to Shakespeare Cliff Lookout and Cooks Beach returning back to Ferry landing for your short trip back across the river to one of the many fine cafes and restaurants for your refreshments.

Grade: 3 with the short steep ascent out of Back Bay

Bring a bottle of water and camera.
