Walk Grade (1-Easy 5-Hard) Please Book Sturdy Footwear Required Please Pack Food and Drink No Dogs Not Suitable for Prams

FRIDAY April 20

The Cookson Kauri Walk starts at the Wainora Campsite, approximately 7 kilometres from the Kauaeranga Visitor Centre. The track, has a steady incline and a section of steps towards the end. It crosses the Wainora Stream a number of times and these crossings are all bridged. The track is through regenerating bush approximately 80 to 100 years old.  The Cookson Kauri with no obvious defects, would most likely not have been harvested because of the awkward nature of the felling site. Once felled, the tree would have been almost impossible to move.

Cookson Kauri

The Cookson Kauri is likely to be 500 to 800 years old. The giants of the forest were 1000 to 2000 years old and their girth was largely determined by their growing conditions. The better the conditions the bigger the girth.

Please bring your lunch and sturdy footwear.
