With the Golden Hills Mine Area, the 500-metre long mining tunnel that you walk through on a historic loop track Collins Drive provides an opportunity to experience a real underground mine system. This tunnel was driven through the hill in a fruitless attempt to find a quartz reef with payable ore. You will need a torch or headlamp. Getting there: Broken Hills is 19km from Tairua and 27km from Whangamata. Turn off State Highway 25 at Hikuai onto Morrison’s Road then onto Puketui Valley Road. It is 6km to the Puketui Valley roadend car park.
